This course is actually two courses within three quarters. The first quarter focuses on a combination of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in the context of competitive policy debate, individual events, and student congress. The second two quarters are a continuation of eighth grade accelerated reading classes. Literature units will include short stores by renowned authors, mythology, several novels, and plays. Writing units include the study of formal grammar, including sentence parts, correct usage, capitalization and punctuation. These skills are combined in the production of several formal writing assessments. Students will be expected to work independently at a raped pace. Participation in out of class tournaments determines grade eligibility. Three tournaments are required for an A; two tournaments are required for a B; to pass the class students must attend at least one out of class tournament.
