This course is designed to examine a wide range of social, political, and economic questions prevalent in our society today. Local, state, national and world news items will all be featured. Its major objectives are to promote inquiry through presentation and debate of conflicting viewpoints and to assign students to discover and reflect upon societal problems relevant to their lives. This course encourages students to take a stand on an issue. It will provide opportunities to apply techniques of investigation and inquiry to the study of significant problems or issues. Students will be exposed to a wide range of magazines, newspapers, journals, movies, and television programs. Emphasis will be placed upon writing and speaking. This course will prepare students for participation in our democratic system.
