Accelerated Reader
Program
Monthly Incentives
Each
month the classroom teacher sets a goal for his/her individual
classroom. Students that meet this goal because they have read and
completed comprehension tests on their AR books receive a monthly
incentive from their teacher. Teachers are given money from the
PTO to purchase these incentives for their readers.
A.R. Field of Fame
Each year students
strive to get a baseball with their name inscribed on it
placed on the “AR Field of Fame” wall in the school
library. In order for this to happen, a student must earn 25
points. Their baseball moves further into the field for every 25
point mark they achieve. Each time a student’s name appears on the
wall or moves to the next level, his or her name is announced
during the Morning Message program. A building goal is set in the
fall for students to achieve their dream........a beach party in
May.
End of the Year Trophy
|
All students in grades 2 - 6 have the opportunity to earn an
AR trophy. Any student who reaches their grade’s point level
is presented with a trophy at the End of the Year Awards
assembly in May. Students must earn the following point totals
in order for this honor to occur:
Grade 2 - 75 points |
Grade 5 - 150 points |
Grade 3 - 100 points |
Grade 6 - 175 points |
Grade 4 - 125 points |

AREA Reading Program
Roosevelt
Elementary School is part of South Dakota’s Advanced Reading
Enhancement Approach (AREA) Program. The ultimate goal for the
first, second, and third grade teachers who are participating in
this program, as well as Mr. Stacey, is to ensure reading success
for all of the students at Roosevelt. The main emphasis of this
program is to assist the classroom teachers in the area of guided
reading, word development, self-selected reading and writing.
Reading Recovery
Reading Recovery
is an early intervention program that helps the lowest achieving
first grade students at Roosevelt develop effective reading and
writing strategies. This program will enable them to become
successful, independent readers and writers. Reading Recovery is
based on the premise that early intervention in the education
process needs to occur before students develop poor habits that
can be difficult to change. Roosevelt Elementary School currently
has two Reading Recovery teachers.
STAR Reading and Math Diagnostic Tests
These diagnostic
tests, which are taken on the computer, provide teachers and
parents with valuable information about individual reading and
math abilities. The STAR Reading test is given at the beginning of
each quarter to measure each student’s growth. This test also sets
reading success guidelines for the children when choosing a book
in the school library.
